Early this year Google has acquired DeepMind. DeepMind is a British Artificial Intelligence Company which was founded in 2011 by Demis Hassabis, the NeuroScientist and former child chess prodigy, and his two friends Mustafa Suleyman and Shane Legg. Google actually paid around five hundred million dollars for DeepMind, a startup even Facebook tried to buy in 2013.
Apart from DeepMind, Google has acquired Bitspin (Android Development Company), NestLabs(Thermostat Company) and Impermium(Software Security Company). The speech translation technologies of Google are dependent on Artificial Intelligence and as we have already seen, DeepMind has the aim of creating computers that act like human. According to its website, with the help of “the best techniques from machine learning and systems neuroscience they build powerful general-purpose learning algorithms.”
The company, build by Computer Engineers and NeuroScientists, have 78 employees who work together to imitate brain functions by combining medical research and technologies. In game designing industry the founder of DeepMind is known as someone having the brains larger than the planet. He has more than 11 years of experience in video game designing. Some of his famous games include Evil Genius and Black & White.
With focus on deep learning, Google will be able to compete with other tech industries as they too will want to acquire companies researching on Artificial Intelligence, in order to create better apps, games, machinaries. Ray Kurzweil, director of engineering focused on machine learning and language processing, said he wants to build search engines advanced enough to function as cybernetic friend. Now with DeepMind being part of the team, such wishes can be turned into reality.
According to Re/code the DeepMind team will report to the senior researcher of Google and its main work will be Google Search Engine. Google Search is literally the backbone of Google. With DeepMind deep learning they can learn from the errors they make and thus can develop better updates. With DeepMind, Google will be able to improve their search engine functionality. Also Google is planning to build self-driving cars, Artificial Intelligence will come in handy there as well. Not only this but deep learning will make the system more secure, the AI process is brilliant when it comes to recognizing patterns and when something will go out of order, it will negate it thus securing accounts from being hacked.
Without a doubt DeepMind is an intelligent inclusion but people have raised security concerns. They want to know how much of their data will be used. Google has well prepared themselves already, they will create an ethic board just to make sure the AI will not be abused and that customers’ privacy will not be taken for granted.
Hopefully with Google DeepMind, in future we get to have better search experience and have smarter machinaries. Only time will tell how beneficial is this acquisition to Google and customers.
