NADRA has shut down a very successful and well-received service that they started providing to Pakistani citizens – delivery of their CNICs at their doorsteps. NADRA hasn’t provided any explanation as to why they have done this but one reason might be the lack of resources to handle such huge numbers of requests they might have been getting from the locals.
NADRA shuts down online CNIC service:
The online CNIC Issuance and Renewal Service debuted in Aug 2015, to critical acclaim and reception by Pakistani citizens during the time. Just after half a year, NADRA has suspended the service infinitely.
As stated earlier, NADRA hasn’t given any explanation behind the ill-advised move, we suspect that the Registration authority was unable to keep-up with the huge amount of requests, hence the move to suspend the service for the time being.
This suspension is service is expected to hurt Pakistan locals since getting the CNIC through normal channel is very time consuming and a lengthy process. For the 190 million citizens of Pakistan, this means waiting in long queues and for hours at least at the nearest NADRA office.
This isn’t a smart move as long as the the digitization of Pakistan is concerned. No point of any IT revolution in the country if its fruits are not reaching the common man of Pakistan. NADRA’s CNIC facility was a promising sign of the nations digitization and its reversal for the locals is a bad decision. However, the interntional Pakistanis can still take advantage of this service as per rules.
Let’s hope that NADRA revives the service for local Pakistani citizens sooner rather than later to give the locals some relief too!
